My Spoiled Golden Retriever Loves the Water

Sharon Hill | June 27th, 2010

It’s about 102 degrees here in Walnut Creek today. Sabrina Renee keeps wanting to go out to play frisbee. So I have let her out to the back patio but instead to frisbee, we’ve been playing with water.

She has her own kiddie pool but she especially like just getting in front of the hose and being sprayed.

Here she is being sprayed at the pool.

When we are done, the water in the pool is used to to water plants in the common area.

My Spoiled Golden Retriever’s Birthday Invitations

Sharon Hill | June 25th, 2010

Sabrina Renee’s birthday is July 11 so we have been slowly getting ready for her doggie birthday party. We ordered invitations a few weeks ago and mailed them out to her guests this week.

I’ve done all sorts of things for her invitations, mostly ordering especially printed ones from invitation albums from a line of stationery products that I represent. However, last year I thought it would be cute to have her photo on the invitations and I decided to do it again this year.

A few weeks ago I told Sabrina Renee that I wanted to take photos for her invitation and she went out to the patio and posed right away. She knew what I was planning to do! A friend said of  course she would pose, she is a total ham!

I took her photo and went to shutterfly.com, tried a her photo on a few different cards and finally settled on “Let’s Party!” I think it suits her perfectly.

Happy Father’s Day!

My Spoiled Golden Retriever Gets Animal Reiki

Sharon Hill | June 17th, 2010

Whenever Sabrina Renee gets a little hyper and out-of-sorts, I call Cathy Currea to schedule a reiki session. She is an animal communicator and animal reiki practitioner.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing method that uses life energy to heal. It releases the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual imbalances that cause discomfort and disease. Usually reiki is done in person with the reiki practitioner moving the energy with their hands hovering over the body. However Cathy can not only do it in person, she can also do it from a distance.

Sabrina Renee’s session was from a distance. We called Cathy and she talked to Sabrina Renee about anything she wanted to tell me – it was mostly about her upcoming party – then Cathy did a healing session. After the session Sabrina Renee is usually relaxed and quiet and today was no exception. For the next few weeks she will be much more grounded, balanced and well-behaved.

Above is a photo of Cathy performing reiki on Sabrina Renee before her birthday party last year.

My Spoiled Golden Retriever Gets Her Anal Glands Expressed

Sharon Hill | June 12th, 2010

My golden retriever has a problem expressing her anal glands herself. Do your dogs have this problem?

Today I took Sabrina Renee down to Muller Veterinary Hospital to get her anal glands expressed. She hates getting her rear squeezed but her glands fill up easily and she doesn’t seem able to express them herself unless she scoots on the carpet. Eeek! But she loves visiting the people who work there. Above she is at the check-in desk with Megan and Tiarra.

Sabrina Renee first went to Muller when I adopted her at 7 weeks. Here are some photos of her at 7 weeks at the same check-in desk with Tiarra.

She fell asleep waiting to see the vet.

My Golden Retriever and I Have a Fun Day in the Park

Sharon Hill | June 9th, 2010

I always like to find different places to walk with Sabrina Renee so today we went down to Civic Park and took the Creek Walk. It starts with a walk across a bridge that goes over the Creek. Sabrina Renee seemed a little hesitant to cross it at first, it is made of wood planks but she sniffed it a bit then went across. She even stopped, sat and looked at the Creek mid-bridge.

She really had a good time on the walk. We saw a huge tree stump and she walked all around it and sniffed it to see what she was all about.

Once we were done with the Creek Walk we walked around the park and Sabrina Renee climbed up on every bench and smiled, like she wanted to be photographed, so I took her picture each time.

When we were done walking in the park Sabrina Renee still wanted to be out so we went to Wags and Whiskers to see her cousin Bodhi.

My Spoiled Golden Retriever and Her Cousin Bodhi

Sharon Hill | June 5th, 2010

Sabrina Renee and I needed to go downtown to pick up her food. We get it at Wags and Whiskers in Walnut Creek, they have a wide variety of healthy dog and cat food plus some fashionable collars that I love to buy for Sabrina Renee. When we got there, we saw Camille, who works there, and her dog Bodhi.

When we first met Bodhi, I kept remarking how much he and Sabrina Renee looked alike. However, Sabrina Renee was born here in the San Francisco Bay Area (Casa del Oro Golden Retrievers has been breeding show dogs since the 1960’s) and Bodhi, was born, a year later, in Palm Springs. One day I gave his mom a copy of my dog’s family tree so she could compare it to hers. We discovered their mothers were sisters, meaning Sabrina Renee and Bodhi are cousins!

We love going to the store when Bodhi is there, it’s always good to see family.

My Golden Retriever Hosts a Friend

Sharon Hill | June 2nd, 2010

My golden retriever has lots of friends. One of them is Luke, a pit bull lab mix who has survived cancer. He is a sweetheart who lives with three other dogs and is the low man on the totem pole so he really enjoys special attention when he gets it. I invited him over to spend the day with Sabrina Renee, just to play and enjoy some bones. Sabrina Renee is an only “child” so our house has baskets of bones and dog toys and other dogs love to come and check everything out.

For Luke’s day with us, I bought he and Sabrina Renee each a new bone. Funny thing is, while Sabrina Renee  started right in on her bone, Luke didn’t touch his. He waited until Sabrina Renee got distracted then took hers. I guess he like someone else to start his bones. Sabrina Renee just took the other bone and was perfectly happy with it.

Luke later went around to all of the baskets, picking different plush toys and bones to chew on. He had a really good time and Sabrina Renee and I enjoyed watching him enjoy himself. I’m glad she is a generous soul and let him play and eat her things.

I can’t imagine having a house with four dogs, I don’t think I have the time or patience to spend time with all of them and give them the love they need.
