Sunday Walk with My Spoiled Golden Retriver

Sharon Hill | May 30th, 2010

I like to get Sabrina Renee out on weekends for some fun. Today we went down to Civic Center in Pleasant Hill and watched the turtles and the carp in the pond and saw the big fountain in the Square. Sabrina Renee loves adventure and she is happy and excited to be out and have new experiences.

My Golden Retriever Saw These Turtles

As you can see in these photos, Sabrina Renee wears a Halti or Gentle Leader. She pulls and I tried a chest harness, pinch collar and choke chain. I was not able to use any of those well and was concerned that I was hurting her. I went to a Halti last year when we got some one-on-one training and it has worked out the best for us. Sabrina Renee is also wearing her seat belt harness in the photographs. I kept it on her because I wanted to be able to easily grab her if she decided to jump into the pond – she was good – she didn’t.

My Spoiled Golden Retriever Does the Danville Walk

Sharon Hill | May 27th, 2010

I like to take Sabrina Renee to dog events but I am very careful. She doesn’t like dogs she doesn’t know coming up to her face which can easily happen at a public event. I took her tonight to Molly’s Pup-Pur-ee’s Danville walk. It’s an event meant to introduce dog owners to the many fabulous shops in downtown Danville, California.

We went early, about 10 minutes before it started, to avoid the crowd. We picked up a map at Molly’s and went to all of the stores on the list to get our card stamped and pick up dog treats. It was great fun. A couple of dogs got too close to Sabrina Renee which caused her to growl and bark. But she actually did quite well. We visited the stores (below is Sabrina Renee at Presence Gift Shop) in record time then wandered through the various booths in the parking lot and picked up information about local pet vendors.

My Spoiled Golden Retriever Gets Acupuncture

Sharon Hill | May 12th, 2010

Sabrina Renee has been a little itchy and hyper lately so I took her to see her holistic medicine veterinarian, Dr. Rettig, after she got groomed.

As soon as Sabrina Renee saw her, she got very excited, jumping on her, biting and pulling at her sweater and running around the room. Dr. Rettig saw right away that her tongue was not the the right color and she was running hot. She asked when the itching started and if she had eaten anything different recently. Actually, Sabrina Renee had gotten some different treats when we visited the local dog store. As it turns out, she might have been allergic to one of them.

Dr. Rettig gave her an acupuncture treatment. You can see one of the needles in Sabrina Renee’s ear in the photo above. She also had some needles along her back and legs. Sabrina Renee has never been afraid of needles and gets pretty calm during a treatment. She also got an herbal shot and some herbs. She should be fine in a few days.

Happy Mother’s Day!

My Golden Retriever Visits Her Holistic Veterinarian’s New Office

Sharon Hill | May 8th, 2010

Sabrina Renee’s holistic veterinarian opened a new office recently and we went by for a visit. I like to take Sabrina Renee to the vet’s office just to visit or pick up herbs so she gets to know the people who work there and she can feel comfortable when she goes for an exam. My strategy seems to have worked so far because she loves the people who work in the offices and, of course, they love her.

In the photo above is Sabrina Renee with Dr. Karen Rettig. Before we met her Sabrina Renee was quite hyperactive and was always hot. Her coat would occasionally get dull and she would get itchy. Dr. Rettig has helped Sabrina Renee say balanced and healthy with acupuncture, Chinese herbs, flower essences and food therapy.

The photo below is Sabrina Renee delivering her gift of an orchid plant, with a photo of her on the pot, to veterinary technician, Hillary.

Dr. Rettig is in Lafayette, California. Her business is Alternatives for Animals. As of this post, her website isn’t up yet but you can reach her at

My Golden Retriever Wins a Raffle Prize

Sharon Hill | May 4th, 2010

I was excited to get a phone call this afternoon telling us that we had won a raffle prize from the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) event that Sabrina Renee and I attended on Sunday.

We usually win a prize of some sort. Local merchants donate items that ARF volunteers put together in themed baskets. We won the golf themed one. I don’t play golf but the basket contained all sorts of items that I could use, sunscreen, lip balm, a flashing light for Sabrina Renee to wear at night, along with golf balls, a club cover that looks like a cat, tees and a gift certificate to a golf store. Golf items will go to a golfing friend later this week.

While I was picking up our prize, I walked around the ARF facility. It is quite a compound. They rescue cats and dogs out of shelters in Central California, bring them here to Walnut Creek, get them healthy and ready for new homes and adopt them out. They also have education programs for children so they learn how to treat animals with respect. Many of my neighbors have ARF dogs. I was once a volunteer for the organization and I donate many items to their resale store. I like to support organizations that care for animals and do animal rescue.

A Wonderful Weekend with My Spoiled Golden Retriever

Sharon Hill | May 2nd, 2010

Sabrina Renee and I had a wonderful weekend together.

Yesterday our friend Cathy Currea, who is an animal communicator, held a teleseminar, Introduction to Animal Communication. I have taken her classes before but never one of her teleseminars. I didn’t know if I would like it but I thought it might be fun for Sabrina Renee to be able to hear the class. I listened on speaker phone and Sabrina Renee stopped what she was doing as soon as she heard Cathy’s voice and was relaxed and attentive the whole two hours of the call. It was remarkable. I totally believe that animals understand us and can be connected to us at a soul level. We need to listen and understand them more than we do. Even Oprah says animals can be soulmates and has said she and her late dog Sophie were definitely soul connected.

Today, Sunday, we went downtown and attended a dog event sponsored by Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation. Every year they close a couple of blocks in our shopping plaza and have a dog walk and lots of vendor booths. We went down at 9:30am, even though the event starts at 11am, and there were already lots of people and dogs. Booths went up quickly to accommodate the morning rush.

Sabrina Renee doesn’t always like these events. Last year we got to the street and she backed up, she didn’t want to go. She almost did that today but I encouraged her. Then we found a lot of people there who knew us, a few we haven’t seen in awhile, and she got a lot of adoration and was fine.¬† I was really proud of how calm she was. Her veterinarian had a booth¬† and commented on how well she behaved she was today, too.

Around 11:30am, Sabrina Renee headed out. It was getting hot and very, very crowded and after two hours she was tired. We got home and she took a long nap. We played frisbee in the patio later, took a few walks then in the evening we went out to the patio again. She played a little then just laid down to relax.

The photo above is of Sabrina Renee relaxing after a happy weekend. Notice my trees have some well-bitten off branches.
